Maliah LaCour recorded her first double-double of the season to lead the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Lady Buccaneers against Wiley University, but it was not enough as UVI fell 86-46 at the Alumni Gymnasium in Marshall, Texas on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half of the game, the Lady Buccaneers (0-11, 0-10 HBCUAC) displayed competitiveness and found themselves trailing by just one point with 3:15remaining before halftime. However, a 10-0 run by the Lady Wildcats shifted the momentum, leaving the UVI trailing 35-24 at the break.
The Buccaneers faced offensive challenges as they began the second half of play, with turnovers hindering the team’s performance. Points scored off turnovers allowed the Lady Wildcats to extend their lead, while UVI struggled to match their offensive tempo. Ultimately, the Lady Wildcats pulled away and secured a decisive victory.
LaCour, a native of Dallas, Texas, led the Lady Buccaneers in scoring with 20 points. Additionally, she grabbed 11 rebounds, achieving her first double-double and first double-digit rebound performance of the season.
Ashukamay’ah Phillips was the only other Lady Buccaneer in double digits as she added 15 points.
Looking ahead, the Lady Buccaneers will travel to Jackson, Mississippi for the final game of their three-game road trip. They are scheduled to face Tougaloo College (11-7, 8-3 HBCUAC) at the Kroger Gymnasium on January 20th.
